Episode 126: 1 Billion Dollar Revenue

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made over the past year, or year and a half?  I was in a room with entrepreneurs who generate over $1 billion in annual revenue and that question was one of the most important when it came to learning how to take your business to the next level.  Join me as I share the answer to this question and the stories behind them.

  • Severance packages are the cost of poor leadership
  • Never take your foot off the pedal on a prospect
  • Be careful of who you are hiring
  • Just one person can affect the culture of a company and not always in a good way
  • How you personally lead will make or break the success of your team and over the business
  • The opportunity costs due to lack of action
  • Make sure you have deep conversations with the people you want to promote as sometimes they are already in the right position for them
  • Always be recruiting. Ensure you have the team members to handle the opportunities as they arise
  • When it comes to launching, ensure you have the framework fully developed before doing so
  • Keep your eye on the marketplace
  • Balance your priorities
  • Have a cyber plan and cyber insurance program
  • Hire great people, give them authority and get out of their way

Until next time, get out there and make a difference, be unstoppable, and leave no regrets!

Episode 115: Coach ‘Em Up Or Coach ‘Em Out

So, you have hired the best applicant for the position. But just because they were the best does not mean that they need little training and coaching.  In this week’s episode, I discuss what the onboarding process should look like including training and evaluation.  This is all-important because you will need to determine whether there is potential for growth within the agency or if you need to release them back into the marketplace.

  • You have hired however you still need to be recruiting, never stop
  • After hiring there are different phases to put your new recruit through; training, motivation, and accountability.
  • The 10,000-foot view of the insurance business, what it is, and the tools used to implement this training
  • Creating short term, mid-term, and long-term expectations for new team members
  • Utilizing checklists for getting them started in your agency
  • Assigning various mentors to train on different days so as not to tax the demands of your other employees
  • A look at the first few weeks of training, with both expectations and accountability being evaluated
  • Identifying areas of needed improvement to determine whether you are continuing with them or termination

Until next time, get out there and make a difference, be unstoppable, and leave no regrets!

Episode 37 : Become The Leader You Would Follow – Part 1

Would I Follow Me?

It is my sincere belief that you have unique gifts and talents that have ONLY been given to YOU.

That you have a calling in your life and a significant purpose to live out.

In your own special way…you influence others.  You engage your kids, friends, & co-workers into your vision,  ideas and choices.

This is when most people think… “Who me? I’m not a leader I’m just a ______.”

That is total BS!

You are called to a specific purpose and my job and goal is to help draw it out of you.

To light up that flame inside your belly to go for your dreams and to live your life to the fullest every single day.  To be the best version of yourself which will in turn inspire those around you to also unleash their true potential as well.

If you resonate with any part of what I’m saying then I want to really encourage you to explore learning more about growing your leadership skills.  Whether you’re a parent, salesperson, or entrepreneur…you ARE a leader and you influence those around you.

It’s time to master your leadership skills, grow the leaders around you and build your legacy… no more playing it safe or being “average.”  Ask the question “Would I follow me?”

Make a difference, be unstoppable and leave no regrets!

What more can we do for you?

Episode 23 : Snail Mail Your Team

Motivate Your Team – All of the Time

Our encouragement and motivation doesn’t stop at the office.  We even use snail mail! We like to send direct mail pieces to our people on a regular basis. A lot of business owners may think this idea is strange—we see these people every day, so why pay for postage to send them something in the mail when we could just walk over and hand it to them? It really comes down to the elements of surprise and intrigue. Sure, you could hand someone an envelope, but what if it showed up unannounced at the person’s door? The effect is much more dramatic.

One year we had a direct mail campaign to the team members’ home addresses that lasted an entire year. We had set a goal that year of getting 90 new applications per month. We had nine team members at the time, so we divided 90 by 9 to reach a value of $10. We included a written example of this goal with $10 bill attached, every month, to the team members’ home. We encouraged sharing with the entire family.  The $10 represented a number that, when multiplied, equaled their monthly goal for attracting new business.  Then we sent out another follow-up, motivational note two weeks later. They received a motivational note and a reminder every two weeks, all year long, to keep this goal in the cross-hairs.

If all it takes to help your team feel important and needed is to spend a little money on some paper and postage, then I say that is one wise investment. Take care of your people, and they will take care of you.

Episode 13 : Wheel of Fortune

Our Wheel of Fortune program is, hands down, our very Biggest Team Motivator!

In our particular organization, the “Living Agency Laboratory”, it is done every third Wednesday of the month in our lobby.  What they have to bring in order to qualify to spin the wheel of fortune is their game tracking sheet. The mindset of the activities listed on the sheet are similar to the type of process where we want to get a series of “yeses”. If you’re talking to somebody about insurance, for an example, what you want to do is you want to ask them questions so they’re continually saying “yes”. It’s the same type of thought process with our team members.

We want them to continue to perform activities time and time and time again so that after a while these activities become daily habits.

So we create activities that they will perform such as telling people about our referral program, collecting or updating e mails within all of our systems. There’s lots of ways they can win and the good news about the wheel of fortune you can create your wheel of fortune matrix – anyway that you want.

What you want to always be doing is always be doing something that’s going to keep people on their toes that it’s going to keep it spontaneous so that they never know where you’re coming from. And that’s really, really important in my book. I always keep them guessing, they never know what I’m going to do and it keeps it fun and exciting.

People love games of chance. They love to get involved. They love to see if they can win, including your team members. Good luck!

Episode 8 : Embrace Team Meetings

Questions continue to surface on how we organize our team, keep our team together, keep them motivated, keep them moving forward, compensate them at a level that keeps that motivates them, keeps them producing, and so on.

The hands down, number one thing that we do team wise is the weekly team meeting. It happens every Wednesday morning at 8:29am, and it’s over by 8:59am. It’s not very long, but I come to the table with an agenda every week, and I bring something of value to the agenda, a meaningful conversation that might be going on in the mind of my marketplace, and in this particular instance, it’s my team members’ marketplace.
